Organizational capacity and ecological restoration

Organizations entrusted with responsibilities and resources to repair ecosystems have for many decades pursued their defining purpose against long odds created by a host of inherent challenges, notably the time frames required ecological recovery landscape-level stressors. Global change compounds these increasing shocks operating environments organizations. Interest in assessing organizational capacity respond system (i.e. resilience) productively has been strong fields, though not restoration arena. The objectives this paper are build awareness importance organizations achieving aims spur research strengthen sector. I summarize on relevant sector foundation propose framework proposed is an adaptation models used other sectors, based five critical capacities: situation awareness, governance leadership, internal resources, external relations, readiness. We can assess extent which organization possesses each eliciting feedback about functions linked capacity. Devising assessment tools from requires attention key realities including prevalence short-term funding, effect externalities outcomes, dependence partnerships multiple complex large restorations. Exploration into approaches highlights major knowledge gap that, if addressed, could enhance reliability as global local strategy improving services.
